Home Learning

Home Learning tasks help students with their education by complementing and reinforcing classroom learning. It fosters good lifelong learning and study habits whilst providing an opportunity for students to be responsible for their learning.

Home Learning may include:

  • Prep to Year 4:

    • – In Prep to Year 4, homework will progressively increase in duration of time, and is typically less than 30 minutes per day.
    • – Daily independent reading.
    • – Daily reading to, with, or by parents/caregivers or older siblings.
    • – The extension or completion of class work, projects or assignments as well as other curriculum areas.
    • – Extension of class work by practising skills (such as practising the recorder) or gathering extra information or materials.

    Years 5 & 6:

    • – In Years 5 & 6, homework is typically less than 45 minutes per day.
    • – Daily reading of appropriate material such as newspapers, journals, and magazines in addition to reading for pleasure.
    • – The extension or completion of class work, projects or assignments as well as other curriculum areas.
    • – Extension of class work by practising skills (such as practising the recorder) or gathering extra information or materials.
    • – Research.

    Parents can help children by:

    • – Encouraging a regular daily session to examine and complete home learning tasks
    • – Discussing key questions or suggesting resources to help with set tasks
    • – Helping to balance the amount of time spent between home activities and recreational activities
    • – Asking how home tasks and class work is progressing, and acknowledging success
    • – Talking to teachers to discuss any concerns related to home learning tasks
    • – For upper primary students, checking term home learning tasks have been set and ensuring all work is located in their take home pocket
    • – Reading texts set by teachers
    • – Discussing their child’s responses to set texts and asking to see work they complete in relation to these tasks
